Development Log

Overview:

The development process for this game began with working on deciding on an idea for the game.

Our primary idea was to have a main door that could only be opened when the player had the three colored keys. Each of the colored keys would be found in one of the other sections of the map by evading obstacles and enemies. Our first steps were to create the player movement along with doors and keys that could be used to develop a general skeleton of the game. We then moved on to secondary features such as sound, enemies, and obstacles in order to make the overall game more interesting. With the basic elements of the game fully developed we were able to work on designing the different sections of the game and creating a full game loop. Lastly we worked on incorporating playtesting feedback into the game by making changes to the doors and layout of the game map.

Playtesting:

We did a series of playtests at different points in our development process and were able to make changes based on the feedback we received. Our beta version playtesters told us it was hard to tell when there was a door on the south wall of the map. From this feedback we worked to adjust the angle of the camera and added indicators to show where doors were in the map. This helped the player understand all of the options they had in order to explore the entire map. After playtesting we also worked on fixing minor bugs with player movement and how the doors and keys were connected. With the second round of playtesting we focused more on editing the level design to place the enemies and obstacles in order to balance the difficulty of each section of the game. Overall playtesting and building on feedback was very important to our development process.
