Development Log Postmortem

Successes:

The primary success of this game is that we were able to develop the main features of the game. Most notably we were able to develop sections of the game so that the difficulty was balanced and the player was able to fully explore the map in order to find the three important keys to open the primary door. In addition, we were able to develop obstacles and enemies for the player to contend with in order to make the game more challenging. Lastly, we were able to add sound and consistent art in order to tie the game together. As a whole the

Challenges:

The main challenge we faced in developing the game was the time and the readability of our levels. We had a lot of ideas that we wanted to incorporate into the game but with the time constraint, it was unlikely that we would be able to fit it all in. The features that we were able to implement into the game were not as polished as we would have liked. With the readability, we ran into issues where playtesters did not realize there was a door on the wall at the bottom of the screen. This was something that we had noticed before playtesting but the feedback and suggestions playtesters provided was helpful in solving this issue. In order to solve this issue we were able to add indicators to the doors so that the player would know there was a door and be able to fully explore the map. An addition challenge that came up was the health system. There was inconsistencies with the heart display.

What you learned:

During the development of this game we all learned more about 3D games in Unity and how to use the NavMesh in order to implement player movement. In handling the NavMesh we also learned how to create enemies that chase the player around the map. We also focused on learning more about how the player mechanics affected other aspects of the game. For example, the player NavMesh affected the resume button of the pause menu and required an extra condition in the player movement code to make sure that the player did not move when the resume button was clicked. Overall we were able to learn a lot about the NavMesh, 3D development in general, and collaborative programming/

Possible future revisions:

There are many possible features that could be added to the game in order to improve the experience. One expansion could be to have more easter eggs throughout the game so that the player would be more rewarded for exploring the entire map. Another feature could be allowing the player to gain power-ups for speed or double keys through pick up objects. These advantages could make the game feel more interesting and competitive, making the experience more engaging. Lastly, this game could easily be expanded by adding more levels or sections to the game and expanding the preexisting map. In general, there are many possible improvements that could add variety to the game and make it a better product.
